Candyman Plot

A follow-up to the 1992 horror film Candyman, set in the now-gentrified Chicago neighborhood where the legend began.

It is based on Clive Barker’s short story “The Forbidden.”

Candyman Narrative

Visual artist Anthony McCoy lives in Chicago with his girlfriend, art gallery director Brianna Cartwright, in 2019, twenty-seven years after the events of the first film. Troy, Brianna’s brother, tells the story of Helen Lyle, a graduate student who went on a killing spree in the early 1990s. Her rampage ended with a bonfire outside the Cabrini-Green housing project, where she attempted to sacrifice a baby.

Anthony wanders around Cabrini-Green for inspiration, desperate for a creative spark to turn his career around. He eventually meets William Burke, a laundromat owner who tells him the Candyman story. Burke had a terrifying encounter with Sherman Fields as a child in 1977, when the police suspected him of putting a razor blade in a piece of candy that ended up in the hands of a white girl.

Burke inadvertently alerted the police to Sherman’s presence inside the walls of one of the tower blocks, leading to Sherman’s death by beating. When children continued to receive candy containing razor blades, Sherman was cleared, and legend has it that if someone says “Candyman” five times in front of a mirror, Sherman’s spirit will appear and kill the summoner.

Inspired, Anthony creates an art exhibit based on the legend of the Candyman and displays it at Brianna’s art gallery. He is disappointed when it fails to elicit a positive response from the audience. That night, the Candyman slaughters one of Brianna’s coworkers and his girlfriend after they say his name five times in front of a piece of Anthony’s exhibit consisting of a mirror.
