Finch Narrative

A solar flare destroyed the ozone layer ten years ago, raising temperatures to 65 degrees Celsius (149 degrees Fahrenheit) and turning the Earth into a radioactive, uninhabitable wasteland. Finch Weinberg, a robotics engineer, is one of the few survivors, living alone with his dog, Goodyear, in an underground St. Louis laboratory owned by the company he worked for before the disaster.

When Finch goes scavenging for supplies, he wears a protective suit he made himself and drives through the area in a mobile home. Finch, who is dying of radiation poisoning, is working on a special robot companion for his dog that will look after him after he passes away. He gives it the name Jeff and feeds it encyclopedic knowledge, including a dog training and care manual.

When a severe storm threatens St. Louis, Finch, Jeff, and Goodyear board the motor home and head for San Francisco. However, due to the hurried departure, only 72 percent of the planned data could be uploaded to Jeff, who now has the mental capacity of a child. Despite the fact that his condition is deteriorating, Finch continues to try to teach the android important lessons about life and how to protect Goodyear.
