A Discovery of Witches Plot

Diana Bishop, a historian and witch, gains access to Ashmole 782 and realizes she must unravel its mysteries. The enigmatic Matthew Clairmont offers her assistance, but he’s a vampire, and witches should never trust vampires.

Diana Bishop, a reluctant witch and historian, discovers a cursed manuscript in Oxford’s Bodleian Library. This discovery forces her to re-enter the world of magic in order to discover the secrets it holds about magical beings.

A Discovery of Witches Narrative

Diana and Matthew arrive in London on All Hallows’ Eve, 1590, a little later than planned. When they enter Matthew’s London home, they are met by Kit Marlowe, who immediately suspects Diana because he recognizes her as a witch. Diana, in turn, realizes Kit is a daemon. Diana is introduced as Matthew’s wife. In this era, he goes by Matthew Roydon, a member of the School of Night.

Diana quickly learns that he is also a spy for the English crown, reporting to William Cecil. Diana comes across a witch who resembles Sophie Norman and realizes she has found her ancestor. The witch, on the other hand, refuses to teach Diana because she is afraid of both Diana’s unpredictable powers and Matthew’s reputation. When Jack, a street urchin, tries to steal Diana’s purse, she prevents Matthew from scaring him away and instead brings the boy home. She asks Jack about any rumors he may have heard, and he says they came from a local tavern frequented by Kit.

When Cecil orders Matthew to interrogate a witch, Thomas Caldwell, his loyalties are put to the test. This pits Matthew against Andrew Hubbard, a vampire who rules over all of London’s creatures and maintains an uneasy truce with the de Clermonts. Matthew also tries to mend his relationship with Kit by partaking in a belated All Souls’ Day celebration. Diana tracks down the witch Susanna Norman and persuades her to come to the house while Matthew is away.
