All of Us Are Dead Narrative

A male student is frequently and violently bullied in the origin story of the zombie infection. Mr. Lee, his father, has a PhD in cell biology and works as a science teacher at the same high school where his son attends. At his wits’ end, he researches and develops the “Jonas Virus,” which preys on human fear and converts it into rage, in an attempt to strengthen his son and help him cope with the bullying.

The premise of the Jonas Virus consuming human fear and transforming it into zombie rage is intriguing, but it is disappointingly underdeveloped in the series. One can imagine the many creative directions and adventures this premise could have taken the show, such as using the lack of fear in certain characters to explain their resistance to the virus or investigating possible “cures” to combat the Jonas Virus.

Nonetheless, All of Us Are Dead eventually resorts to a constant stream of narration via grainy videos shot by Mr. Lee in his science lab and dimly lit home. In these videos, we hear him wax lyrical about human ideals, the monstrosity of evil that the Jonas Virus represents, and the unavoidable “system of violence” from which he was unable to save his son. All of Us Are Dead becomes a desperate survival show as a result, and somewhere around the second half of its breathless chase around the school, the 12-episode series begins to slow down.
