Better Call Saul Plot

Ex-con artist Jimmy McGill morphs into his alter ego Saul Goodman, a morally challenged criminal lawyer, and goes through a series of challenges and tragedies as he transforms into his alter ego Saul Goodman, a small-time attorney.

Better Call Saul follows the transformation of James “Jimmy” McGill, a former con artist attempting to become a respectable lawyer, into the flamboyant criminal lawyer Saul Goodman (a play on the phrase “its all good, man!”) over the six-year period preceding the events of Breaking Bad, from approximately 2002 to 2008.

Better Call Saul Narrative

Following the events of Breaking Bad, Saul Goodman resides in Omaha, Nebraska as “Gene,” the manager of a Cinnabon. He watches a VHS clip of a 2005 Saul Goodman TV commercial after work. Jimmy McGill (Saul’s given name) is a struggling public defender in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2002. He tries to persuade Craig and Betsy Kettleman, who are accused of embezzling, to hire him. Jimmy looks after his semi-reclusive brother Chuck, who believes he has electromagnetic hypersensitivity.

Jimmy also confronts Howard Hamlin of Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill (HHM) when Howard tries to buy Chuck out with a small amount, insisting that HHM pay Chuck for the full worth of his partnership. When the Kettlemans hire HHM, Jimmy arranges a bogus vehicle-pedestrian accident for Betsy in the hopes of gaining another chance to win her over. Jimmy’s thugs, twins Lars and Cal, mistakenly target the wrong automobile, which is driven by gangster Tuco Salamanca’s abuelita. Lars and Cal try to persuade her to pay by following her into her home, where Tuco beats and ties them up.

Tuco drags Jimmy in at gunpoint as he arrives at Tuco’s grandmother’s house. Jimmy tries to explain that Cal and Lars messed up. Lars instantly accuses Jimmy after Tuco allows Jimmy to view them. Tuco, Nacho, and No Doze whisk Jimmy and the twins away to a secluded desert location. Tuco is persuaded by Jimmy that he is a lawyer, and Nacho persuades Tuco that killing a lawyer would attract unwanted attention.
