Boardwalk Empire Plot

The federal government is particularly interested in Enoch Thompson, the treasurer of Atlantic City, because he is friends with both gangsters and politicians.

Boardwalk Empire is a period drama about Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (based on the historical Enoch L. Johnson), a politician who rises to power and controls Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the Prohibition era in the 1920s and 1930s.

“Boardwalk Empire” is a 1920s drama set in Atlantic City, New Jersey, about the rise of organized crime during Prohibition. The people are looking for their booze. And gangsters in New York, Chicago, and other cities recognize an emerging market when they see one. Despite the fact that films have previously tackled this subject, “Boardwalk Empire” is the first television series to do so and find a gold mine of original, fresh stories.

Aside from that, HBO is the channel to watch for a costume drama if there ever was one. Unlike “The Tudors” on Showtime, this one will blend historical accuracy with the gravitas of well-drawn characters (though, in fairness, there was something joyously guilty about the slighter “Tudors”).

What Winter has done with his writing and what Scorsese has done with the look is set up a template where you can see plenty of opportunity for years of storytelling almost from the first episode. Steve Buscemi, who plays Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, the treasurer of Atlantic City and the half-politician, half-gangster who runs the place, leads the ensemble series. Like all truly intriguing characters, Nucky is more than just a greedy profiteer and elected con man skimming riches off a town known as “the world’s playground.”
