Dune Plot

The film is based on Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel about the son of a noble family who is entrusted with the protection of the galaxy’s most valuable asset and most vital element.

It is the first of a planned two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name, covering the first half of the book, and is the second film adaptation of the novel after David Lynch’s 1984 film.

It follows Paul Atreides and his family, the noble House Atreides, as they are thrust into a war for the dangerous desert planet Arrakis, between the native Fremen people and the enemy invaders, the House Harkonnen, in the far future.

Dune Narrative

In the year 10191, Duke Leto Atreides accepts the stewardship of the dangerous desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune, the only source of the universe’s most valuable substance, “melange” (also known as “spice”), a drug that extends human life, provides superhuman levels of thought, and allows for faster-than-light travel.

Even though Leto is well aware that the chance is a clever trap created by his enemies, he brings his Bene Gesserit concubine Lady Jessica, his young son and heir Paul, and his most trusted advisors to Arrakis. Leto takes over the spice mining operation, which has been made dangerous by the appearance of huge sandworms.

A tragic betrayal leads Paul and Jessica to the Fremen, Arrakis tribes who live deep in the desert.

The film follows Paul through his meeting with Chani and his triumph in a Fremen ritual battle with Jamis, events that Paul had seen in prior visions marking the end of his existence as Paul Atreides and the beginning of his life as “Paul Muad’Dib,” the Fremen messiah.
