Emily in Paris Plot

A marketing firm in Paris hires a young American woman from the Midwest to provide them with an American perspective on things.

She is tasked with bringing an American point of view to a venerable French marketing firm. Cultures clash as she adjusts to the challenges of life in Paris while juggling her career, new friendships, and love life.

Emily in Paris Narrative

Emily’s boss, Madeline, is preparing to move from the Gilbert Group, a Chicago-based pharmaceutical marketing firm, to Savoir, a French-based fashion firm, when she discovers she is pregnant. Emily accepts Savoir’s job offer, leaving her boyfriend behind in Chicago. Emily relocates to Paris despite the fact that she is illiterate in French.

She moves to the 5th floor of an old apartment building with no elevator but a stunning view of Paris. Emily sets up an Instagram account and starts documenting her time in Paris. Emily begins her first day of work, much to the chagrin of her new coworkers, who reveal that she was hired solely for a business transaction. She introduces American social media strategies to the French, who appear to be wary of her and her American methods.

Emily makes numerous faux pas as she adjusts to life in Paris, and the firm dubs her “la plouc” or “the hick.” Emily meets Mindy Chen, a Shanghai-born nanny, and they quickly become fast friends. After Emily and her boyfriend attempt cybersex but the connection fails, she plugs in her vibrator and accidentally short-circuits the power to the block.
