Fruits Basket (2019)

Fruits Basket Plot

When an orphan moves in with members of the reclusive Soma family, she discovers they are cursed with a curse that transforms them into animals from the Chinese zodiac at inconvenient times, and she vows to assist them in lifting the curse and restoring peace to their family.

The first season adapted the first five volumes of the manga, as well as portions of volumes six and seven. It aired on TV Tokyo, TV Osaka, and TV Aichi for 25 episodes from April 6 to September 21, 2019.

Fruits Basket Narrative

Tohru Honda, a high school girl living in a tent in the woods, comes across a nearby house and runs into her classmate Yuki Sohma, as well as the house’s owner, Yuki’s cousin Shigure Sohma. Yuki then follows Tohru to school, where she is harassed by some of Yuki’s admirers until she is rescued by her friends Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima.

Later that night, Yuki and Shigure notice Tohru returning to the tent and learn that she was originally living with her grandfather after her parents died, but her grandfather’s house is currently being renovated and she does not want to impose herself on her other relatives or friends. After the tent is destroyed by a landslide, Tohru accepts Yuki and Shigure’s offer to temporarily live with them.

Shigure explains to Tohru that, in addition to himself, Yuki, and Kyo, ten other members of the Sohma family would transform into a Chinese zodiac animal whenever they felt weak, stressed, or were embraced by someone of the opposite gender. Tohru promises to keep the Sohmas’ family’s identity a secret.
