Heartstopper Plot

Teens In this coming-of-age series, Charlie and Nick discover that their unlikely friendship may be something more as they navigate school and young love.

It follows Charlie Spring, a gay schoolboy who falls in love with someone he sits next to in his new form, Nick Nelson, while also delving into the lives of Charlie and Nick’s friends Tao, Elle, and Isaac.

Heartstopper Narrative

Charles “Charlie” Spring, a Truham Grammar High School student, is dating Benjamin “Ben” Hope. Charlie is assigned to sit next to Nicholas “Nick” Nelson, a rugby player with whom he develops feelings in his new form class. They become friends, despite Charlie’s uncertainty about Nick’s sexual orientation. He accepts Nick’s invitation to join the rugby team. Charlie texts Ben, stating that he no longer wishes to meet up.

Charlie complains to Nick about his relationship with Ben, whom Nick dismisses. Tao Xu, Charlie’s friend, believes Nick is heterosexual and advises Charlie to abandon his feelings for Nick, but Charlie refuses. Tao informs him that Nick is dating a girl named Tara Jones, who is friends with Elle at Higgs. Tara is in a same-sex relationship with Darcy Olsson, which Elle soon discovers.

Nick has been invited to Harry Greene’s 16th birthday party. Nick extends an invitation to Charlie, who accepts. Tao begins to be envious of his friend’s crush, which causes their friendship to deteriorate. Harry and his friends begin to tease Nick for being with Tara, and Charlie flees the scene in fear. Tara comes out to Nick, causing him to sever his friendship with Harry.
