House of the Dragon Plot

After the death of their father, two siblings fight for the throne, thereby causing a civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

The series is set about 100 years after the Seven Kingdoms are united by the Targaryen Conquest, nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen.

House of the Dragon Narrative

After losing both of his sons, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen calls for a Great Council to determine the next heir to the throne. The lords of Westeros choose Prince Viserys, the eldest grandson of Jaehaerys, over his sister Princess Rhaenys. Nine years into his reign, King Viserys organizes a tournament to celebrate his queen’s pregnancy and hopes for a long-awaited male heir.

Despite the warning of Lord Corlys Velaryon, the Master of Ships, the Small Council disregards the threat of the Triarchy, a powerful alliance of Free Cities in Essos that may harm Westerosi shipping lanes. Hand of the King, Ser Otto Hightower, criticizes Prince Daemon, the brother and heir to Viserys, for his harshness as the commander of the City Watch. At the tournament, the common-born knight Ser Criston Cole surpasses Prince Daemon in a competition, much to the king’s disappointment.

Unfortunately, Queen Aemma dies in childbirth after King Viserys performs a C-section that she begged him not to. Their son, Baelon, also passes away shortly after. Despite pleas from the council to select a new heir, King Viserys refuses until he learns that Prince Daemon had mockingly named Baelon as “The Heir for a Day.” This revelation causes Viserys to banish Daemon from King’s Landing and appoint his only surviving child, Princess Rhaenyra, as the heir to the Iron Throne. Viserys also reveals to Rhaenyra Aegon the Conqueror’s dream of unifying Westeros, inspiring her to pursue his legacy.
