How I Met Your Father Plot

Sophie and her tight-knit group of friends are figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.

It is a stand-alone follow-up to How I Met Your Mother. Hilary Duff, Christopher Lowell, Francia Raisa, Suraj Sharma, Tom Ainsley, Tien Tran, and Kim Cattrall star in the series.

How I Met Your Father Narrative

Each episode of Kim Cattrall’s How I Met Your Father begins with Future Sophie, a glass of wine in hand, telling her son the long, winding story of how she met the boy’s father. Future appeared in the pilot episode of How I Met Your Mother. Ted astonishes his children by revealing that the woman he embarrassingly confessed his feelings for on the first date was actually their Aunt Robin, leaving their mother’s identity an ambiguous mystery to the viewer until the final season.

The other major difference in the formula of How I Met Your Father is that, while Kim Cattrall appears multiple times per episode as the show’s narrator, you never see her son. So far, the two are shown talking over a futuristic version of FaceTime, with Future Sophie speaking to a screen that the audience does not see.

Rather than following in the footsteps of How I Met Your Mother, the new series flips the formula by putting the narrator front and center throughout each episode, while keeping Sophie’s son hidden—though it’s unclear how long the character will remain hidden.
