Maid Plot

Alex, a single mother, turns to housecleaning to make ends meet while escaping an abusive relationship and overcoming homelessness in order to provide a better life for her daughter, Maddy.

The show follows Alex’s struggles with raising a young child, dealing with an abusive ex-boyfriend and her own dysfunctional family, and navigating the red tape of government assistance, all while working as a maid and aspiring to be a writer.

Maid Narrative

Alex Russell, a young mother and aspiring writer from Port Hampstead, Washington, abandons her alcoholic, emotionally abusive boyfriend Sean in the middle of the night, taking their two-year-old daughter Maddy with her. Alex, who is forced to sleep in her car and has little money, visits a social worker, who informs her that she must present two pay stubs in order to qualify for subsidized housing.

The only job available is at Value Maids, a cleaning company owned by Yolanda, who hires her on the spot. Alex has her manic, free-spirited mother Paula, who works as an artist out of her boyfriend’s RV, babysit Maddy while she takes the ferry to Fisher Island for her first shift at wealthy client Regina’s lavish home. Alex passes out in the middle of her shift; when she returns to the mainland, Paula has returned Maddy to Sean’s care, unaware that Alex had left him. Despite Sean’s protests, Alex returns to Sean’s trailer and takes Maddy back.

In flashbacks, Alex meets Sean for the first time while reciting some of her personal writing at a restaurant. In the present, Alex receives a call from Sean’s lawyer, who informs her that Sean has filed a petition to reclaim full custody of Maddy. Alex’s social worker suggests she seek refuge at a local domestic violence shelter. Alex befriends Danielle, a fellow resident, while he is there.
