Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area Plot

Thieves take over a unified Korea’s mint, trapping hostages inside; the police must stop both the thieves and the shadowy mastermind behind the heist.

The series, which is both a remake and a spin-off/continuation of the Spanish TV drama, follows the original’s storyline and characters. “The Professor” (Yoo Ji-tae), a strategist criminal mastermind, plans a heist inspired by those in Spain in the reunified Korean Peninsula.

The series began with a female North Korean soldier narrating her life before the reunification of North and South Korea, who was secretly a fan of South Korean K-pop boy band BTS. The story began in 2025, when the Korean peninsula’s North-South border opened, allowing North Koreans and South Koreans to commute between the two countries for work, as well as the South’s investments in the North and the construction of the Joint Economic Area (JEA) for the two Koreas’ economic growth.

The soldier, who, like many North Koreans, went to the South to find work, but instead became a fugitive, robbing and killing loan sharks who extorted many poor North Koreans. The soldier was later recruited to help commit a four trillion won money heist by a man who introduces himself as the “Professor,” and thus went by the code name “Tokyo.”

Former North Korean camp prisoner “Berlin,” con artist “Nairobi,” ex-convict “Moscow” and his son “Denver,” skilled hacker “Rio,” and brothers “Oslo” and “Helsinki” from a Yanbian gang also joined Tokyo. The group went to the JEA Mint and held employees and visitors hostage while attempting to print bank notes worth four trillion won.
