Murderville Plot

Terry Seattle and his celebrity guest partner improvise their way through a scripted murder investigation.

Each episode features a guest star in the role of a rookie detective. The guest, on the other hand, is not given a script ahead of time and must improvise their way through the episode as they try to figure out who the true killer is.

Murderville Narrative

Murder in Successville, of course, derived its somewhat ironic title from a heavy reliance on its audience’s knowledge of the British B-list, with a cast of professional impressionists (and quite a few jobbing comedians) performing send-ups of celebrity suspects: Gary Barlow, Boris Johnson, Cara Delevingne, and so on. Murderville departs from the original in this regard, ditching self-consciously patchy celebrity impersonators in favor of a proper Hollywood cast of suspects, detectives, and police officers.

This is also where Murderville may make its most egregious mistake. Murder in Successville was a ramshackle affair that relied heavily on the charisma of its lead detective, Tom Davies’ bungling DCI Sleet, to forge a path through its strange and chaotic myriad of celebrity impressionists and odd setups. The BBC’s effort was sloppy, ridiculous, and frequently felt like being on the set of an Iceland ad after someone had slipped some LSD into the party rings, but it capitalized on this to surprising effect.

Murderville, perhaps unsurprisingly, fails to replicate this quality. Despite Arnett’s consistently strong comedic chops, Murderville is a sleeker, smoother, and far more clinical affair, even if it appears to be trying hard not to be. The show’s higher production values, better guest stars, more elaborate locations and set-ups, and lack of impersonators take away the anarchic edge of the original.
