Our Flag Means Death Plot

In the early 18th century, Stede Bonnet, a spoiled aristocrat, abandons his life of privilege to become a pirate.

Stede Bonnet’s life is loosely based on the series. Captain Bonnet, an aristocrat, abandons his comfortable life and family in 1717 to prove himself as a pirate during the Golden Age of Piracy, despite his lack of aptitude for the role.

Our Flag Means Death Narrative

Stede Bonnet, an English aristocrat eager to demonstrate his ability to achieve great wealth and fame on his own, abandons his family and spends his fortune building a ship, the Revenge, outfitting it with all manner of luxuries, and hiring a seasoned crew, declaring himself a pirate captain. After a few months, the crew becomes bored and irritated with Stede’s genteel demeanor and lack of pirating experience, and threatens to mutiny and kill him.

Stede finds a ship for them to pillage in order to save himself. The ship turns out to be a Royal Navy warship captained by Nigel Badminton, Stede’s childhood bully. Stede invites Nigel and his officers aboard, pretending to be an aristocrat. Nigel mocks Stede and calls him pathetic; enraged, Stede strikes him on the head, causing him to accidentally stab himself in the eye with his sword.

After their ship is accidentally beached on an island, Stede orders his crew to take a “vacation” to recover their strength. The hostages escape into the island’s jungle, and Stede, Black Pete, and Oluwande set out to find them. While walking along the beach, Lucius discovers that his crewmate “Jim” is, in fact, a woman in disguise. He barely escapes Jim’s clutches before he is killed.
