Archie Andrews discovers his passion for music during an eventful summer that includes the alleged drowning of quarterback Jason Blossom. Soon after, he begins his sophomore year and expresses his passion for music to Betty Cooper, the sweet girl next door with her own secret—her feelings for Archie Andrews. We soon learn that Archie had a secret rendezvous with Ms Grundy, Riverdale High’s music teacher, on July 4th.

Miss Grundy insists that he not reveal that the two of them heard the gunshot that may have killed Jason, while Veronica’s kiss with Archie strains his relationship with both girls. Kevin is disturbed by Jason’s body discovery and refuses to acknowledge Moose’s feelings for him. After inadvertently discovering Archie and Grundy holding hands, Jughead deduces their secret and confronts Archie for refusing to go to Kevin’s father, the sheriff.

Archie seeks advice from his father, Fred, and decides to come clean. Cheryl forms a friendship with Betty, but it quickly fades when it becomes clear that she holds Polly, Betty’s sister, responsible for Jason’s death. Cheryl flees after hallucinating Jason on the field at a pep rally in his honor; in the locker room, where Veronica has followed to console her, Cheryl admits that Jason was supposed to “come back.” Betty, against her mother’s wishes, rekindles her friendships with Archie and Veronica, while Archie reconciles with Jughead.
