Scenes From a Marriage Plot

A remake of Ingar Bergmann’s 1973 Swedish TV miniseries about a failing marriage.

It follows the disintegration of Marianne’s (Liv Ullmann), a divorce lawyer, and Johan’s (Erland Josephson), a psychology professor’s marriage.

Scenes From a Marriage Narrative

Marianne and Johan, a wealthy couple, are interviewed for a magazine series on love after renewing their marriage contract after their tenth anniversary. They come across as an ideal couple with two daughters in the interview. Following that, they entertain the couple Peter and Katarina, who are in a bad relationship.

Marianne wakes up one morning determined not to visit her parents for dinner, as the family does every week, but then changes her mind. At Johan’s workplace, he shares poetry that he hasn’t shown Marianne with a female colleague, who tells him it’s mediocre. Later, Marianne and Johan discuss their lack of enjoyment in their sex life.

Johan tells Marianne that he is having an affair with a much younger woman named Paula, an unseen character, and that he wishes to divorce her. He plans to leave for several months and expresses his dissatisfaction with their marriage as well as his long-held desire to leave. When Marianne calls a friend for assistance, she discovers that many of her friends were aware of the affair before she was.
