Severance Plot

Mark leads a team of office workers whose memories have been surgically divided between their work and personal lives; when a mysterious colleague appears outside of work, it begins a journey to discover the truth about their jobs.

A “severance” program is used at Lumon Industries in New York City to separate employees’ non-work memories from their work memories.

Severance Narrative

The first half of “Severance” takes place in a small department at Lumon Industries called MacroData Technology. There are no windows in this room. The walls are devoid of posters. Four cubicles sit in the room’s center, where four employees mine data, a process that entails looking at numbers and waiting for a gut reaction to indicate that they should be shuffled off into a folder.

Mark (Scott), Helly’s guide, was promoted after his best friend Petey was abruptly fired. Mark is reeling from the new responsibility and the loss of one of his only companions—remember, these people are referred to as “innies” because they only have coworkers in their lives. Helly basically fights back, attempting to leave Lumon over and over again only to have her “outey” keep sending her to work.

Of course, Mark’s “outey” version has a backstory. He’s a quiet soul who’s still grieving the loss of his wife in a car accident, which adds emotional weight to the concept of “Severance” who wouldn’t want to leave that kind of pain behind for eight hours a day? Mark has a pregnant sister (Jen Tullock) and a brother-in-law who do not believe he made the best decision.
