Succession Plot

The Logan family is well-known for owning the world’s largest media and entertainment conglomerate. Their world, however, changes when their father retires from the company.

The Roy family, owners of media conglomerate Waystar RoyCo, is the next in line. Logan Roy (Cox), the family patriarch, has deteriorated in health.

Succession Narrative

Logan Roy, CEO of the family-owned media conglomerate Waystar RoyCo, turns 80 today, and members of the Roy family are preparing to celebrate. Kendall, Logan’s second-oldest son, believes he is the company’s heir following his father’s retirement, but Logan surprises his family at his birthday celebration by announcing that he will not step down as CEO.

He hands over papers to his children, granting his third wife, Marcia, two votes on the trust to determine his successor upon his death. Logan fires his longtime COO Frank Vernon during the family’s traditional softball game, and agrees to give a new position to his estranged great-nephew Greg Hirsch, who was fired from one of Waystar’s parks. Kendall exits the game in order to complete Waystar’s acquisition of the media startup Vaulter.

The Roy children are divided over who should take over Waystar after Logan’s incapacity: Roman and Connor want to sign the papers out of respect for their father’s wishes, whereas Kendall believes he should become CEO, and Shiv is opposed due to concerns about Marcia’s role in the company. Greg is dispatched by Marcia to retrieve Logan’s belongings from his apartment.
