The Chair Plot

At the English department meeting, Ji-Yoon tells her associates that registration in their courses are down. The Dean tells Ji-Yoon that she must remove three members from her department due to low registration. Ji-Yoon tells Yaz she should combine her lecture section with Elliot’s, who’s supposed to be chairing Yaz’s hitch case. In the combined class, Elliot treats Yaz like a education adjutant rather than anotherco-professor.

Dafna, the by-product of one of the board of trustee members, who gave Bill a lift to academe, leaves a pie at his doorstep. Ju Ju makes her new nanny uncomfortable, so Ji-Yoon leaves her with her father so she can attend the faculty party. Ji-Yoon smokes a joint with Bill outside at the party and either has to deliver a speech, where she announces Yaz will take the Distinguished Lectureship this date.

At the punitive proceding, Bill refuses to write a public reason for the Nazi welcome. Instead he wants to talk to the scholars himself, saying he’s proud of the scholars’ dissent. Ji-Yoon follows Bill out, upset that he’s not taking the matter seriously and that he’s arrogantly walking out from the consequences of his action. Bill thereafter talks to scholars protesting the Nazi welcome, comparing himself to professors who fled Nazi Germany and saying the scholars are misinterpreting what he did.

Ji-Yoon tells Bill he’s being suspended, isn’t allowed on garth, and he must write a formal reason. Bill and Ju-Hee bond while helping each other write reason letters. Ju-Hee says she prefers being called Ju-Ju rather than her full name, yea though she was named after Ji-Yoon’s mommy. Two scholars meet with Ji-Yoon, concerned that Yaz may not be given tour, noting another professor of color who was denied tour. Ji-Yoon advocates for Yaz with Elliot, which Elliot pushes back on.
