The Gilded Age Plot

Marian Brook, a rural girl, relocates to New York following the death of her father. Things become more complicated when she is forced to assimilate into the clan of a railroad tycoon.

It takes place in the United States during the Gilded Age, during the 1880s boom years in Manhattan.

The Gilded Age Narrative

Bertha Russell, an unabashed social climber in 1882 New York City, tells her railroad magnate husband, “I don’t want my old friends, I want new friends.” The haughty Agnes van Rhijn sits in her brownstone across from the Russells’ marble mansion, upholding the standards of her class against the nouveau riche and their ilk.

“In this house, we only accept the old, not the new,” she instructs Marian, the penniless niece she has taken in. In The Gilded Age, the new series created and written by Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey, Bertha and Agnes embody the delicious class conflict. It’s best to replace Downton with Edith Wharton, whose socially astute novels, including The Age of Innocence, defined the era of US history in which the series is set.

While The Gilded Age and Downton Abbey have a similar appeal – both are character-rich, colorfully costumed dramas about money and manners – they exist in different worlds, highlighting the differences between the British and American class systems. During the late nineteenth century, there was a whirlwind of upward mobility in the United States, involving new money and ruthless industrialists.
