The Last Kingdom Plot

During their invasion of England, the Danes capture and raise Uhtred, a young heir to the Saxon earldom. Years later, the Danes put Uhtred’s loyalty to the test.

The year is 866, and the arrival of the Great Heathen Army in Britain is about to reshape the relationship between Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. Following the establishment of Danish rule in Jórvk and East Anglia, the show focuses on the Kingdom of Wessex’s resistance to ongoing Viking incursions into Southern England.

The Last Kingdom Narrative

In 866, the Danish earl Ragnar leads a fleet of dragonships to the coast of Northumbria, where he murders Uhtred, the eldest son of the Saxon Lord of Bebbanburg. At Eoferwic, Uhtred confronts Ragnar and his Danish army. The Danes stage a retreat, prompting the Saxon army’s reserves to attack, only to be flanked by a hidden force of Danes. Ragnar kills Uhtred and takes his 10-year-old son Uhtred and a Saxon girl named Brida as slaves.

Later, the boy saves Earl Thyra from Sven, son of Kjartan, one of Ragnar’s ship captains. As punishment, Sven is blinded in one eye, and Kjartan is exiled. Uhtred and Brida are raised as Danes and pagans by Ragnar’s family. Earl Ragnar is killed in his hall by a vengeful Kjartan and Sven when Uhtred and Brida are young adults. Only Thyra survives, and she is kidnapped and sold into slavery.

Uhtred is blamed for Earl Ragnar’s death during a reported Saxon uprising in the North. He pleads his innocence to Danish warlords Ubba and Guthrum, but he stands by and watches as they murder East Anglian King Edmund in the style of Christian martyr Saint Sebastian. Because Ubba and Guthrum do not believe Uhtred is not responsible for Ragnar’s death, Uhtred and Brida flee to Winchester, the capital of Wessex and the last surviving Saxon kingdom.
