The Lincoln Lawyer Plot

In this series based on Michael Connelly’s bestselling novels, an iconoclastic idealist runs his law practice out of the back of his Lincoln Town Car.

In Los Angeles, lawyer Mickey Haller works from the back of his Lincoln Navigator.

The Lincoln Lawyer Narrative

It starts simply: An accident 18 months ago nearly killed Haller and hooked him on painkillers. He has now been sober for a year. During that time, he resigned as the best defense attorney in Los Angeles and divorced his prosecutor wife Maggie McPherson. However, the murder of his colleague, Jimmy Vincent, in a parking garage by an unknown gunman draws Haller back into the law.

Before Haller can get started, there are a few things to consider: Judge Mary Holder requires him to attend weekly meetings to demonstrate his competence. Vincent also left the office in disarray, necessitating the hiring of Haller’s second ex-wife, the plucky Lorna, as his assistant and her reformed biker gang boyfriend, Angus, as his investigator.

Garcia-Rulfo had big shoes to fill after McConaughey. But, wisely, the Mexican-born actor does not attempt a carbon copy of the former’s performance. Instead, he portrays the defense attorney as nervous, less in command of his faculties, but still cocky and allusive on the outside. His turn tracks: With Haller dipping his toe back into the water, he won’t be the same man who held a motorcycle gang over a barrel in a shakedown for more money in the film.
