Heartbroken Anna, watching the world go by from her living room window, sets her sights on a handsome new neighbor until she witnesses a gruesome murder.

Anna, a bereaved woman, is unsure whether or not she witnessed a murder.

Anna awakens one morning to see a handsome new neighbor, Neil, driving his daughter, Emma, to school through the window. She drives herself to school, thinking she has to drop off her daughter, Elizabeth, before remembering that Elizabeth died three years ago. Anna makes a chicken casserole but frequently breaks it. She also hears strange voices coming from her roof, leading her to believe in monsters.

Anna arranges a date with a man at Carol’s suggestion, but she rejects him after having a hallucination of Elizabeth playing with toys. Anna pays a visit to Elizabeth’s grave and tells her about her new neighbors. “If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever,” her headstone text says. Emma becomes closer to Anna as she sells chocolates.

As Anna grows closer to Neil, his girlfriend, Lisa, pays him a visit, which irritates Anna. Anna overhears Carol discussing Anna’s drinking habits. Anna goes to therapy, and her therapist advises her to stop taking pills with wine, which she ignores. She tells the therapist that when her ex-husband, Douglas, took their daughter to a jail for an investigation, she was murdered and eaten by a prisoner.
