This Is Us Plot

Kevin, Kate, and Randall, three siblings, face unique personal struggles at various stages of their lives as they seek happiness and overcome a tragedy in their past.

The show follows the lives of three siblings, Kevin, Kate, and Randall (dubbed the “Big Three”), as well as their parents, Jack and Rebecca Pearson.

This Is Us Narrative

The intertitle quotes a Wikipedia statistic about the number of people with the same birthday. In 1980, Jack Pearson was 36 years old when his wife Rebecca gave birth to their triplets. Kate, a personal assistant in the present, celebrates her 36th birthday by recommitting to losing weight, and she meets Toby at a support group.

Kevin, her brother, is a well-known actor who is best known for his role in the sitcom The Manny; on his 36th birthday, he expresses his dissatisfaction with his role and quits abruptly in front of a live audience. Randall locates and confronts his father, William, who abandoned him at a fire station the day he was born, on his 36th birthday; Randall then invites William to his home.

Rebecca and Jack are having marital issues (as seen in flashbacks). Beth, Randall’s wife, is suspicious of his biological father’s current motives. Toby and Kate start to fall in love with each other. Kevin learns at a party that he has a two-year contract to continue working on his sitcom. Kate and Toby dance at the party despite the laughter. Kevin turns to Randall for advice, with whom he has had a tense relationship since childhood.
