True Detective Plot

While investigating homicides, police officers and detectives across the United States are forced to confront dark secrets about themselves and the people around them.

The first season is set in Louisiana and follows a pair of Louisiana State Police detectives as they pursue a serial killer with occult ties over the course of 17 years.

True Detective Narrative

The third of January, 1995, in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana. State homicide detectives Martin “Marty” Hart and Rustin “Rust” Cohle look into the death of a prostitute, Dora Lange. Her body was discovered posed as if in prayer, with her head crowned with deer antlers and her body surrounded by twig latticeworks resembling Cajun bird traps.

Hart and Cohle investigate a five-year-old missing-persons case involving a girl named Marie Fontenot. Another child claimed to have been chased through the woods by a “green-eared spaghetti monster” around the same time. Hart invites Cohle to dinner at the insistence of his wife Maggie, but is enraged when Cohle arrives drunk. They come across another twig latticework while investigating the Fontenot disappearance.

Cohle and Hart’s feud erupts in 1995 after Cohle suspects Hart of cheating on Maggie. Reverend Billy Lee Tuttle, a well-known evangelist and the governor’s cousin, advocates for a police task force to investigate “anti-Christian crimes,” such as the Lange murder. Hart and Cohle’s investigation leads them to a remote ranch where runaway girls work as prostitutes.
