Vikings Plot

Ragnar Lothbrok, a legendary Norse hero, begins as a simple farmer and rises to become a fearless warrior and Viking tribe commander with the help of his equally ferocious family.

The stories of the Norsemen of early medieval Scandinavia inspired the series. It is loosely based on the exploits of the legendary Viking chieftain Ragnar Lothbrok and his crew, family, and descendants, as detailed in the 13th-century sagas Ragnars saga Lobrókar and Ragnarssona áttr, as well as Saxo Grammaticus’ 12th-century work Gesta Danorum.

Vikings Narrative

Ragnar’s army triumphantly returns to Kattegat, where the Earl immediately confiscates the looted treasures, except for one piece per man. Ragnar takes Athelstan, who is distraught, and returns home. Ragnar is perplexed by the monk’s faith and vow of chastity, but he nonetheless gathers useful information about the kingdom of Northumbria. Earl Haraldson authorizes another raid on England based on this new information.

Ragnar re-embarks quickly, accompanied by Lagertha and the Earl’s brother, Knut, leaving Athelstan to look after the farm and the children. When the Vikings arrive in England, they are greeted by the local sheriff and a small group of armsmen, who invite the newly arrived “traders” to meet King Aelle. Ragnar agrees, but the distrust of his other warriors sparks a battle in which the Northumbrians are slaughtered.

As the villagers gather for Mass, Vikings raid the Northumbrian village of Hexham with little bloodshed. Lagertha kills Knut during the raid when he tries to rape her. Back on the beach, the raiders defeat a superior Northumbrian force led by Lord Wigea and return to Kattegat. Earl Haraldson has Ragnar, who claims to be the murderer of Knut, arrested and tried at the Thing assembly.
