Young Rock Plot

A look at superstar Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s formative years as he grows up.

The sitcom is set in a frame story in which Johnson is running for president of the United States in 2032. Each episode features Johnson taking part in an interview or other conversation, which causes him to flashback to a story from one of three different eras of his life.

Young Rock Narrative

The story is framed by a device that places us in the year 2032. The Rock is running for president on the basis of what appears to be rousing clichés rather than a belief system. The Rock is seen directing meetings with Randall Park, who appears to have transitioned from entertainer to anchor person/writer in two of the three scenes leaked to pundits. No one here seemed to notice they were taking this outlining device from Disney+’s Diary of a Future President, which is a reflection of our divided media landscape (and an impression of how immediately CBS dropped the 2017 sitcom Me, Myself and I that no one made that correlation by the same token).

At that point, the story spans three different time periods. In 1982, Dwayne is ten years old and lives in Hawaii with his father, who is wrestling with a group of future geniuses and his mother on Dwayne’s grandmother’s famous nearby circuit. Dwayne moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1987, and his parents had fallen on hard times, forcing him to rely on shoplifting and the lowest pay allowed by law work to keep people around him believing he was productive.

The pilot, which Khan wrote and directed, is the only scene that highlights the bookends as well as each of the three storylines, and it fails miserably. It’s far too difficult to consider raising the stakes and circumstances in each period, let alone legitimize the wrestling philosophy of “working the trick,” for anything to be remotely clever.
