Luca Plot

A human and a sea monster disguised as a human form an unlikely but strong friendship on the Italian Riviera.

The film is set on the Italian Riviera and follows Luca Paguro, a young sea monster boy with the ability to assume human form while on land, as he explores Portorosso with his new best friend, Alberto Scorfano, on a life-changing summer adventure.

Luca Narrative

Luca Paguro, a young, timid sea monster, herds goatfish off the coast of Portorosso, Italy, in the summer of 1959. His parents, Daniela and Lorenzo, forbade him from approaching the surface, fearing that humans would hunt him for food. One day, Luca meets Alberto Scorfano, a fellow sea monster child who lives alone above the surface, claiming that his father is simply not present much of the time.

Luca tries to reconcile with Alberto and discovers that Alberto’s father abruptly abandoned him a long time ago, leading Alberto to believe he was at fault and should not have friends. When Alberto refuses to cooperate, Luca sets out on his own to win the Vespa and make things right. Following a series of mishaps, Luca takes the lead in the bicycle race, but is forced to seek shelter when it begins to rain. Alberto arrives with an umbrella, but Ercole knocks it away, revealing both boys to be sea monsters.

They flee Ercole, who now intends to kill them and collect the bounty money, but Giulia assists them by colliding her bike with Ercole’s, injuring herself in the process. Luca and Alberto return to assist her, eventually standing up to Ercole. Massimo, who reveals that the boys are his friends, defends them from Ercole and the other fishermen. He also mentions the fact that they have crossed the finish line and won the race.
