“Ray Donovan” gets the chance to clean up another mess two years after its abrupt cancellation without an actual ending with “Ray Donovan: The Movie,” designed to provide the closure that longtime viewers lacked. There is some of that, but, unlike the show’s infamous fixer, it isn’t as tidy a job as it could have been in terms of tying up loose ends.

For those who may have forgotten, the seventh season ended with a shootout that left Mickey, the family’s amoral patriarch, on the run and Smitty, Ray’s daughter Bridget’s husband, dead. The film picks up where it left off, with Ray determined to settle old scores while reminiscing through flashbacks about his complicated childhood with Mickey, and how Ray ended up in his current line of work.

“Ray Donovan” has always been about pain and loss, and whether they ultimately translate into revenge or forgiveness. Ray became one of the most tortured characters in this modern era of antiheroes, trying to look out for his brothers, each of whom carries their own heavy baggage.
