The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Plot

On their way to Laketown, Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit, and his companions face numerous perils. They soon arrive at the Lonely Mountain, where Bilbo meets the fearsome dragon Smaug.

The plot revolves around the titular character Bilbo Baggins, who joins Thorin Oakenshield and his fellow dwarves on a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug.

At the Prancing Pony, Gandalf and Thorin Oakenshield meet, and Gandalf persuades Thorin to reclaim Erebor and the Lonely Mountain. Following the events of the previous film, Thorin and his company are pursued by Azog and his Orc party 12 months later. Gandalf leads them to the nearby home of Beorn, a skin-changer who can assume the form of a bear.

That night, the Necromancer summons Azog to Dol Guldur and orders him to gather his forces for war. Azog then delegated Thorin’s hunt to his son Bolg. The next day, Beorn leads the company to the outskirts of Mirkwood, where Gandalf discovers Black Speech imprinted on an ancient ruin. This, along with a previous request from Galadriel, compel him to investigate the Nazgûl tombs.

He warns the group to stay on the path and then departs. When they enter the forest, they become disoriented and are ensnared by giant spiders. With the help of his newly acquired invisibility ring, Bilbo then sets about freeing the dwarves. After brutally killing a creature to retrieve the Ring, he drops it and begins to understand its dark influence.
