The Last Duel Plot

Based on the true story of France’s final combat trial in the Middle Ages. After Jean’s wife Marguerite accuses Le Gris of rape, Knight Jean de Carrouges challenges his former friend Jacques Le Gris to a duel. Told from a variety of “Rashomon-style” points of view.

Based on Eric Jager’s 2004 book The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France The film is set in medieval France and stars Damon as Jean de Carrouges, a knight who challenges his friend, squire Jacques Le Gris, to a judicial duel after his wife, Marguerite, accuses Jacques of rape.

The Last Duel Narrative

Jean de Carrouges and his friend, squire Jacques Le Gris, swear fealty to Count Pierre d’Alençon, who has been named Jean’s overlord by his cousin, King Charles VI, after serving in the Caroline War. Jacques later informs Jean that Pierre has ordered his new vassals to pay war levies, and agrees to request leniency on Jean’s behalf when de Carrouges explains that he lacks the funds. Jean marries Marguerite de Thibouville to restore his finances, receiving a large dowry and the rights to many valuable estates. Pierre, on the other hand, has already given Jacques one plot of land.

When Jean sues for possession of the land, King Charles dismisses the suit. Pierre responds by appointing Jacques captain of a fort that Jean’s family has held for generations. Jean is knighted for bravery but bankrupt after a military campaign in Scotland. When Jacques returns home from a trip to Paris, Marguerite informs him that Jacques raped her while she was at home alone.

Jacques earns Pierre’s trust by organizing the count’s finances with his knowledge of mathematics, earning him a position at court. When Jacques meets Marguerite, he falls in love with her and is convinced that she loves him after she shows him kindness. While Jean is gone, his mother employs servants to assist her with errands, leaving Marguerite alone. Jacques summons his servant to the door, claiming that his horse has thrown a shoe. She lets the man in, but he is quickly followed by Jacques, who declares his love for Marguerite.
