The Northman Plot
The Northman is an action-packed epic directed by visionary Robert Eggers that follows a young Viking prince on his quest to avenge his father’s murder.
The story follows Amleth, a Viking prince on a quest to avenge his father’s murder.
The Northman Narrative
After his overseas conquests, King Aurvandill War-Raven returns to his kingdom on the island of Hrafnsey in AD 895, where he is reunited with his wife, Queen Gudrn, and his son and heir, Prince Amleth. To prepare Amleth for the throne, the two take part in a spiritual ceremony presided over by Aurvandill’s jester, Heimir.
Masked warriors led by Aurvandill’s brother Fjölnir ambush and murder the king the next morning. Amleth flees by boat after seeing his village massacred and his mother kidnapped by his uncle, vowing to avenge his father, save his mother, and kill Fjölnir.
Amleth is discovered by a band of Vikings and raised as a berserker among them. Years later, following an attack in the Rus, Amleth meets a Seeress in the temple of Svetovit; the Seeress predicts that Amleth will soon exact revenge on Fjölnir, and that his path will be intertwined with a Maiden-King.
