The Power of the Dog Plot

When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, a domineering rancher responds with mocking cruelty, until the unexpected happens.

During a cattle drive in Montana in 1925, wealthy ranch owners Phil and George Burbank meet widow and innkeeper Rose Gordon. The gentle George falls head over heels for Rose, while the volatile Phil, influenced by his late mentor “Bronco” Henry, mocks Rose’s son Peter for his lisp and effeminate demeanor.

George and Rose marry soon after. Rose spends George’s money to send her son to college to study medicine and surgery, while she relocates to the Burbank ranch house. Phil dislikes her right away, believing she married George for his money. His rough demeanor and taunting demeanor frighten her. George hosts a dinner party for his parents and the governor to meet Rose and hear her play their new piano.

Phil is nowhere to be found after George asked him to wash his hands before dinner. Rose is hesitant to play the piano due to her lack of ability, but George and their guests put pressure on her to do so. She is unable to play more than a few notes and is humiliated further when Phil, who is still filthy, enters and belittles her. She takes a drink of alcohol as they leave, something she had previously opposed.

Rose has become an alcoholic by the time Peter arrives at the ranch for the summer, which she conceals from George. Phil and his men mock Peter, and he isolates himself in his room, dissecting animals and researching diseases. Phil masturbates with Bronco Henry’s handkerchief in a secluded glade.
