The Tragedy of Macbeth Plot

A trio of witches convince a Scottish lord that he will become the next King of Scotland, and his ambitious wife backs him up in his plans to seize power.

On September 24, 2021, The Tragedy of Macbeth had its world premiere at the 2021 New York Film Festival. On December 25, 2021, it had a limited theatrical release.

The Tragedy of Macbeth Narrative

Macbeth and Banquo are approached on the battlefield by three witches after leading King Duncan’s army to victory over the treacherous Thane of Cawdor. The witches congratulate Macbeth on his new position as Thane of Cawdor and declare that he will one day be King, before predicting that Banquo will father a line of kings. King Duncan orders the Thane of Ross to execute Cawdor and reinvest the title in Macbeth.

When King Duncan decides to spend the night at Macbeth’s castle, Lady Macbeth persuades her husband to commit regicide. She poisons the King’s servants, and Macbeth, hesitantly, carries out the murder. Macduff, Thane of Fife, discovers the body early the next morning, while Macbeth murders the servants to tie up loose ends. Fearing for his life, Duncan’s heir Malcolm flees to England, and Macbeth ascends to the throne as the new King.

Macbeth rises to the position of tyrant, becoming increasingly paranoid. He has a hallucination and begins raving about the ghost of Banquo at a royal banquet. Lady Macbeth dismisses the guests before administering a tranquilizer to him. Macbeth is visited by the witches once more while in his trance. They conjure up a vision of Fleance, who warns him to be wary of Macduff, telling him that he will be King until Great Birnam Wood reaches Dunsinane Hill, and that no man born of a woman will be able to harm him.
