West Side Story Plot

When young Tony sees Maria at a high school dance in 1957 New York City, it’s love at first sight. Their budding romance adds fuel to the fire between the rival gangs, the Jets and Sharks, who are fighting for control of the streets.

West Side Story is a remake of the 1957 Broadway musical about forbidden love and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teen street gangs from different ethnic backgrounds.

West Side Story Narrative

In 1957, the Jets, a gang of white youths, compete for control of Manhattan’s West Side’s San Juan Hill with the Puerto Rican Sharks. Officer Krupke and Lieutenant Schrank step in and tell the gangs that their brawl is pointless because the neighborhood is about to be demolished to make way for Lincoln Center. Jet leader Riff proposes a “rumble” (fight) between the gangs because they are too proud to care.

He enlists the help of his friend Tony, who is on parole. Tony refuses, preferring to start over with the help of Valentina, the Puerto Rican owner of Doc’s general store. In the meantime, Maria, Shark leader Bernardo’s sister, is betrothed to his friend Chino but wants to be free. At a local dance, Tony and Maria meet and fall in love. This infuriates Bernardo, who agrees to Riff’s terms for a brawl if Tony shows up. Tony declares his love for Maria, and the two meet the next day on Maria’s fire escape, promising to meet again.

Despite Bernardo’s pessimism, Bernardo and his girlfriend Anita argue about the differences between life in New York and life in Puerto Rico, with Anita believing in the American Dream. The Jets are questioned about the brawl by the cops, but they deny any involvement. Tony takes Maria on a date to the Cloisters in Upper Manhattan. He reveals that he spent a year in prison after nearly killing a rival gang member, which scared him into reforming.
