X-Men: Days of Future Past Plot

Wolverine travels back in time to prevent Mystique from assassinating Bolivar Trask, whose death leads to the development of the Sentinels, which are robots designed to kill mutants.

The story, inspired by Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s 1981 Uncanny X-Men storyline “Days of Future Past,” focuses on two time periods, with Logan traveling back in time to 1973 to change history and prevent an event that will result in doom for both humans and mutants.

X-Men: Days of Future Past Narrative

Sentinels have been programmed in a dystopian future to identify and hunt down mutants and any humans who assist them. They attack a small group of X-Men survivors in Moscow, including Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Blink, Warpath, Bishop, Iceman, and Sunspot, but Kitty sends Bishop’s consciousness back in time a few days to warn the others and ensure their survival.

Storm, Wolverine, Professor Charles Xavier, and Magneto join the group as they retreat to a remote Chinese temple. Xavier explains the origins of the Sentinels, which were created by Bolivar Trask, a military scientist assassinated by Raven Darkhölme in 1973. In response, government forces kidnapped Raven and experimented on her, using her DNA to advance the Sentinel program and allow Sentinels to adapt to changing environments.

Wolverine returns to the X-Mansion in 1973, learning from Hank McCoy that the school has been closed for years due to many students and staff being drafted into the Vietnam War, and Lehnsherr (Magneto) being falsely arrested for assassinating fellow mutant John F. Kennedy. When he was younger and more broken, Xavier turned to alcoholism and frequently used a specialized serum that allowed him to walk but suppressed his telepathic abilities.
